March 8, 2018 - Alex M. Azar II who is the Secretary of Health and Human Services made a bold speech regarding the American Healthcare System and makes no bones about it - "Change is possible, change is necessary, and change is coming."
"The four areas of emphasis are the following: giving consumers greater control over health information through interoperable and accessible health information technology; encouraging transparency from payers and providers; using experimental models in Medicare and Medicaid to drive value and quality throughout the entire system; and removing government burdens that impede this transformation."
He went on to add, "So this administration is calling on not just doctors and hospitals, but also drug companies and pharmacies to become more transparent about pricing and outcomes of their services and products. And if that doesn’t happen, we have plenty of levers to pull to push it along."
Of course transparency isn't a new conversation. GPI has been involved with the transparency movement for some time. Technology makes all things possible. However, this push at the government level means that the American people can now dream of a day when they will have easy access to information on price and quality that can be the catalyst for change resulting in a value based healthcare system and affordable health insurance.
