On its front page, the New York Times (8/1, A1, Pear, Kaplan, Subscription Publication) reports that on Tuesday, a bipartisan group of Senators attempted “to defuse President Trump’s threat to cut off critical health insurance payments, moving around the president toward bipartisan legislation to shore up the Affordable Care Act.” Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-TN), chairman of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, said “his panel will begin work in early September on legislation to ‘stabilize and strengthen the individual health insurance market’ for 2018.” In addition, Alexander urged Trump to continue making ACA subsidy payments to insurers.
